Several animals were found dead with excessive amounts of plastic stuck in their digestive tracts. This fact led to research being administered by Thailand’s government and business leaders.

Thailand was ranked sixth among the world’s top countries that pollute the sea. And the effort to reduce the use of bags made an immediate impact. Now the country occupies the 10th place.

Now customers of major mall retailers either bring their own bags or pay a small fee for a reusable cloth-bag. A public awareness campaign helps people to understand the importance of the plastic bags taboo. This effort has already caused a reduction in waste by 2 billion, or about 5,765 tons last year.
