First Time in History: Female Parliament Speaker in Malawi


Catherine Gotani Hara served as a Member of Parliament from 2009 to 2014. Hara’s experience is extensive: she served in the government as Minister of Health, Minister of Environment, Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, and Minister of Transport and Public Works.

Eisenhower Mkaka, MCP lawmaker and party spokesperson said, “The victory of Hara as first-ever female speaker of parliament is what every Malawian hoped for. Her election should encourage women that if you invest in girls, they can also become leaders.”

Malawian footballer Moses Chavula told Anadolu Agency, “It has been our aim to increase women’s representation in leadership and decision making positions. The election of the first female speaker of parliament is a huge achievement for Malawi.” 


Catherine Gotani Hara will join a growing league of women making change in Africa.
